NATIONAL TENNIS Two Seeds Beaten In Women’s Singles

(New Zealand Press Association? AUCKLAND. The eighth-seeded J. 11. Lockington and sixth-seeded women’s player, Mrs H. Robson, were eliminated from the New Zealand lawn tennis championship singles during second-round play at the Stanley street courts, Auckland, yesterday.

Lockington was beaten by the 18-year-old Wellington player, 0. Parun, after a tough five-set struggle in which both players had chances of victory.

Parun held his first match point when leading, 5-2, in the fifth set, but the unpredictable Lockington fought back well to regain the lead. 6-5. Lockington looked set for victory and held two match points, but Parun held on doggedly to save the situation and win the set, 9-7. Parun moved into the last 16 by virtue of his win and will meet another Wellington player, R. G. Clarke, in the third round today. One of the visiting Australian University players, Miss N. Jenkins, caused the second upset in the women’s singles event

Mrs Robson took the first set, 6-4, and had the chance of a two-set victory when she led, 5-4, in the second set, but lost service twice to lose the set, 5-7. Miss Jenkins proved the steadier in the third set and won, 6-3.

The young North Shore player, Miss S. Reid, who, teamed with Miss Denise Kerr-Taylor, caused the biggest upset on Monday by eliminating the third - seeded women’s doubles pair, Misses E. Terry and B. Paterson, also played her way to the last 16 of the women’s singles. She beat the Wellington junior, Miss H. Peni, 6-4, 9-11, 7-5, and will meet the top seed, Miss K. Melville, of Australia, today. A. S. Mills, of Manawatu, who must surely have the fastest service in New Zealand tennis, had a marathon first set against R. Wong, of Auckland, but could not contain his opponent in the next

two sets. Mills, who had eliminated A. S. Burns in the first round, was beaten 10-8. 6-1, 6-1. Only one of the four top seeds, J. E. Robson, was extended beyond three sets in the men’s singles. Robson lost a set to J. S. Halligan, but had little trouble in taking the fourth set, 6-0. L. A. Gerrard (Auckland), K. Fletcher (Hong Kong), and R. Taylor (Britain), the other three top seeds had easy wins. In the men’s and women’s

doubles all the seeded players survived the opening rounds. The Wellington pair and top seeds, R. Clarke and J. B. Souter, struggled against B. Young and B. Jellard (Auckland) and lost one set before gaining victory. The other three leading seeded pairs in the men's doubles, A. S. Burns and J. E. Robson. L. A. Gerrard and B. E. Fairlie and K. Fletcher and R. Wong were not troubled to advance to the third round.
