Father And Son Beaten

The favoured Christchurch father and son combination of D. and K. Miskimmin was surprisingly beaten by Miss H. Devine (Christchurch) and H. Dempsey (Waimate) in the championship doubles when the first day of the New Zealand junior croquet championships opened in Timaru yesterday.
The matches were very even in spite of the fact that the lawns were heavy. Results were:

Veteran In Form (N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI. Gusting winds failed to mar play on the first day of the New Zealand golden jubilee croquet championships, which started on three lawns in Wanganui yesterday. There were several splendid breaks in the championship doubles. Mr A. G. F. Ross, of Hastings, who played in the first New Zealand tournament in 1912, was in very good form, making an all-round break from a difficult position. Mrs B. A. Jarden, of Lower Hutt, and G. D. Rowing, of Nelson, the defending doubles champions, had no trouble in winning their match against Mrs D. Watts and J. Hunter, of Auckland. Championship Doubles.—First life, second round: T. A. Searell and Mrs Searell (Christchurch) beat Mesdames L. Barlow and D. Young (Wellington), 26-11; Mesdames A. G. Rawlinson (Methven) and H. Dempsey (Waimate) beat D. Curtis (Hastings) and Mrs ,T. N. Ward (Hamilton), 26-21: Mesdames S. Morgan and V. Boyes (Wham) beat Mesdames W. H. Kirk (Christchurch) and L. M. Hfght (Waitoa), 26-18; Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt) and G. Rowling (Nelson) beat Mrs D. Watts and J. Hunter (Auckland), 261.
