15 Months To 2 N.Z. Titles

After only 15 months’ archery, D. McLaren, of Taieri, became New Zealand open and short range target champion yesterday.

McLaren, who won the F.I.T.A. event and was second in the American Round, scored 2322 points to defeat D. Dixon of Matamata in the New Zealand championships at Lincoln College. W. Thomson (Howick), the reigning champion, was third. Long hours of practice have gone into lifting McLaren to such a high level of performance so quickly.

Miss L. Lamberg (Rotorua) retained her women’s open and short range championships. Like McLaren, she won her F.I.T.A. round and was second in the American.

S. Culpitt is proving the second year that he is the best intermediate archer in New Zealand. He won every event last year and has won every event so far this year. The young Aucklander scored 2331 in the open target and 1169 in the short-range.

The 12-year-old P. Butler (Gisborne), who also won every junior event last year, added both target championships to his victory in the clout and seems likely to make a clean sweep again. Auckland clubs won both the men’s and women’s team target championships— Howick and North Shore respectively. Auckland also won the district championship. Results were:—
