APPRENTICES’ CONTRACTS

Record Expected This Year

The District Commissioner of Apprenticeship in Christchurch (Mr V. E. Thomas) has received 800 applications for apprenticeship contracts. They are expected to reach 1000 this year for the first time. More were expected, said Mr Thomas, when factories reopened and the results of school certificate examinations were known. Mr Thomas said that more than 30 trades were represented in the applications. It was estimated that about 30 per cent of boys leaving school in New Zealand took up apprenticeships. Carpentry, he said, remained the most popular trade, closely followed by the motor trade and general engineering.
