Barter For Bride

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 11. The Auckland wages clerk, Mr D. O’Neill, who married a Bantu dancer, Cynthia Rab ebe, in Wellington in November, said today he would have to give a lot of thought to the question of paying "bride price” to her relatives in South Africa. Under Bantu custom, the bride price, or lobola, is normally paid in cattle. “But who has ever had to pay for his wife before?” Mr O’Neill asked. “It’s normally the other way around —the bride’s parents pay for the wedding. I’ll have to give it a lot of thought.”
