The Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson, who is patron of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, has now become a member of the Wellington and Canterbury branches. His Excellency, who visited the Antarctic in 1963, has expressed a wish to attend branch meetings as an ordinary member.
Mr P. Blanchfield, M.P. for Westland, left Greymouth for Wellington on Monday. He will enter Wellington Hospital, possibly for an operation. Mr Blanchfield said he was feeling “extremely well,” but might have to undergo surgery which would confine him to hospital, probably till the end of the month.
Colonel P. G. H. Hamilton, formerly commandant of Waiouru military camp, will leave for Malaysia today to take command of New Zealand forces in the Far East. Colonel L. A. Kermode, the present commander in Malaysia, will return to take charge at Waiouru.
Mr H. Dean, a former manager of Blue Star Lines (N.Z.), Ltd., has succeeded Mr S. V. Jones as general manager of Blue Star (Aust.) Pty., Ltd. Mr Dean was manager of the New Zealand company for nine years and for the last five years has been assistant general manager in Australia. Mr Jones, who retired on December 31, was general manager of the Australian company for 27 years.—Sydney, January 11.
