Murky Water Halts Surfing
(New Zealand Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, January 10. Low temperatures and the danger of sharks caused the cancellation of several events in an international surf carnival between Queensland and 1 aranaki at East End Beach, New Plymouth, today.
The manager of the Queensland surf team. Mr M. J. Klingner, said his team members were not used to the cold and because of the murky condition of the sea sharks could be very dangerous.
As a result of the fatal shark attack at Oakura on Saturday members of both boat crews took rifles out into the surf with them. This was the first time a New Plymouth surf club had done this.
The surfers saw no sharks. No points were taken at the carnival because only half the events were run.
The main event of the day, the six-man rescue event, was won by Taranaki, although Queensland won the fast-mov-ing canoe race by about 20 yards. Other results were:— Beach sprint relay: Queensland 1, Taranaki 2, Taranaki 3. Senior surf race: N. Tyrrell (Q.) 1, J. McLean (T.) 2. R. Coleman (Q.) 3. Junior surf race: J. Velvin (T.) 1, D. Knapman (T.) 2, D. Marriott (Q.) 3.
