Chequer Board Finishes First
(N.Z. Press Association) CAMBRIDGE. The promising four-year-old Northland pacer, Chequer Board, further extended his record by finishing brilliantly to head Lonesome Valley in the last few strides of the F. J. Smith Memorial Handicap. This event was the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Cambridge Trotting Club's summer meeting on Saturday night. Scotleigh led practically throughout the second leg, the McMillan Trotting Free-for-all. and wast first past the post by a length from Wairau King, but an objection was lodged against Scotleigh for crossing too quickly soon after the start. Interference was found to be proved and the first and second placings were reversed. No action was taken against C. R Griffen, the owner and driver of Scotleigh. as it was considered he had suffered substantial financial penalty through the placings being reversed. The Chequer Board-Wairau King double paid £64 9s for £l. Racing was held in fine weather on a hard, fast track. Results: — MEMBERS’ HANDICAP, £275: 2 19 class: 2m. —5/4 ELECTRIC DIRECT (4) It C.
