On-Coarse Double At Washdyke Pays £l7

The holders of 546 5s tickets on the Viewin -On Probation combination received £l7 18s for £1 in the on-course double at Washdyke on Saturday.

For the last seven furlongs Deception received a perfect trailing run behind the coleaders, Say Diana and Space Chief. He was brought three wide to challenge early in the run home and won by half a length without being tested. Space Chief was second by a length and a half from Wacco, which improved from the third line on the home turn and cut Say Diana out of third by a head. Beverley Globe, alongside the winner on the home turn, was five lengths away fifth. She lost the chance of being in the money by breaking near the furlong. The best of the others was lOh Johnny but he was another five lengths away. Odds-On Winner D. J. Townley harnessed Cleome and Russell to finish first and third in the Waimate Handicap. The bracket was a firm favourite and actually odds-on for a win.

Cleome, as expected, succeeded in leading throughout She went out to a long lead early, was given a “breather” then drew out again in the run home.

Tatsy Brigade, which was in touch with the pace all the way, fought on well for second. She was beaten by two and a half lengths but beat Russell by three Russell trotted solidly all the way from 24 yards. Viewin justified solid backing at her first start from C. McDonald’s Yaldhurst stable by winning the First Levels Handicap for which she was favourite.

On Probation capped off some useful place form for his Belfast owner-trainer, C. S. Donald, with a narrow win in the Second Levels Handicap. R. Young had Viewin in , touch with the pace all the way in the First Levels Handicap. She ran in third place for the first mile, improved to trail Fort Worth into the straight and ran it out best to win by three parts of a length. Sonny Jim, third and fourth equal most of the way, ran the last furlong better than Warily, which was in the line ahead of him most of the way. Two lengths separated these two then there was a length to Singing Lad, which ran on I the outer of Double Step in the fifth line till the home turn.

Adorato rounded off a successful day, for his Halsweli trainer, R. Young, when he outran his sprint rivals in the Taiko Handicap. Adorato was the stable’s lone winner but his trainer had three other successful drives during the day.

Adorato improved from the third line to take up the chase after Admire inside the last furlong and ran it out best to win by a neck. Admire, which ran in the same line as the winner till the half-mile but was second equal on the home turn and in front at the furlong, beat Young Lad for second by five lengths. Young Lad came home well once he worked out from fourth place on the inner. The second favourite, Queensway, was two lengths away fourth. She made a big run late in the race after being checked at the start. Lornaway, the papular choice, led in the others. She just battled on from mid-field without ever raising the hopes of her backers.

Fort Worth, which tried to run it in front most of the way, was a close fifth ahead of Angel Lass, one of the early breakers. Mialea broke badly at the start and tipped her driver, L. C. May, from the sulky. Always Handy R. P. Nyhan had On Probation handily placed all the way in the Second Levels Handicap. He was alongside Happy Wanderer behind the co-leaders, Faltuna and Void, on the home turn, set out after Happy Wanderer just inside the furlong and responded
