Ist Race To Westenra
<N Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. ! The world champion glider pilot, G. Westenra (Canterbury), won the first competition at the national gliding championships, which were opened by the Minister of Aviation (Mr McAlpine) at Omarama on Saturday. Conditions were hot and near perfect for the opening event, the two-circuit speed trial, but yesterday was declared a “no flying” day because of the high westerly wind. Among the 19 competitors taking part are another world champion, D. Georgeson (Canterbury), K. Wakeman (Christchurch), who represented New Zealand in Poland in 1958, and L. Harrison, of Australia. Results of Saturday’s events were:— Open Class.—G. Westenra 1, K. Wakeman 2. Fifteen-metre Class. P. Higgenbothem 1, P. Cumming 2. Handicap.—l. Evans 1.
