Russians Taste Defeat Again
(Neir Zealand Press Association) NAPIER. W. D. Baillie and Miss Brenda Matthews, the 16-year-old Auckland sprinter, gave the visiting Russian athletes another taste of defeat at the Rothmans meeting at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday.
The track offered firm foot-1 ’ ing. the weather was fine and I cool. About 2000 attended. i Baillie’s comfortable win in I the three miles was undoubt- ; edly the highlight of the meeting. The Russian, Leonid Ivanov, led for most of the race with Baillie running easily at his shoulder. The first mile was covered in 4min 27sec and the next four laps were evenly run at 70sec. As the bell sounded for the final lap, Baillie took the lead and quickly opened up a gap' of 20 yards. To the roar of the excited, cheering crowd, Baillie maintained a strong pace and finished untested. N. Wyatt (Waikato) began a duel with Ivanov on the top bend, got the upper hand with 30 yards left, and took second by five yards. A Park- | inson (Gisborne) was fourth. Baillie’s time of 13min j33sec was 25sec outside the New Zealand record, held by | R. Clarke, of Australia. Wyatt finished in 13min 35.65ec and Ivanov’s time was 13min 136.45ec. i The world champion. Miss I Irina Press, won the 80 I metres hurdles narrowly from Miss Matthews in Usee. But the Auckland girl had her, revenge in the 100 yards in which both were credited with llsec. G. Morley (Hastings) was third in 12sec. 880 Invitation In the invitation 880 yards. G. Philpott (Auckland) set a scorching pace which apparently had the Russian, Olyeg Raiko. struggling. With 220 yards to go, Philpott was 13 yards clear and seemed to have the race in safe keeping. Suddenly his 1 stride shortened, his arms flopped and he tossed his head from side to side. He staggered to the tape well beaten by Raiko, who came home solidly, and then collapsed and received medical attention. The first lap was unofficially timed at 52sec. Raiko ran the 880 yards in Imin 51.8 see, compared with P. G. Snell’s
I New Zealand and world time iof Imin 45.1 sec. Tamara Press received no worth-while opposition in the women's discus and shot put and broke the New Zealand records easily although a bruised knee restricted her movement. Her best discus throw was 178 ft Ulin, compared with the New Zealand record of 176 ft 2in. She put the shot 56ft, 2ft lOin better than the New Zealand record.
