Canterbury Toils For 207 Runs
(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. It was a battle all the way for Canterbury 7, the present leader in the Plunket Shield competition, to score 207 runs in 310 minutes for the loss of six wickets against tight Central Districts bowling at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, yesterday.
In a day’s play shortened by about 50 minutes because of rain, it was the Central left-arm spinner, B. W. Yuile, who took most of the honours.
He captured five of the six Canterbury wickets, but had to thank the brilliant catching by V. Pollard and D. A. Kinsella for two of his wickets. The pitch, although deadened by the recent rain, was unmarked and did not play any tricks. The weather, apart front the one heavy shower, remained fine. The best Canterbury batting came from the captain, B. F. Hastings, with 47 in 98 minutes, who played some glorious stroking. LIVELY MOTZ
R. C. Motz, in usual style, livened the scoring with three fours and a towering six,
while G. A. Bartlett, 24 not out, batted most sensibly. The youthful J. W. Burtt, playing his first Plunket Shield match, was also not out at the day’s end, with 33 runs. He was very hesitant early in his innings but later blossomed out to score freely on the drive. He and Bartlett put on a most valuable 40 runs during the last 47 minutes. An appeal against the light was made when R. O. Collinge came on to bowl the second new ball but it was turned down by the umpires. Eventually, play was stopped five minutes early, B. G. Hadlee was at the wicket for 156 minutes in scoring 29 runs. He hit out, almost in desperation-it seem-
ed, several times for boundaries before mis-hitting Yuile to Payton at short midwicket.
The stocky K. Thomson lost his wicket to a smart Kinsella catch. Thomson swept Yuile away very strongly to square leg but straight to Kinsella.
But the best catch of the day was that taken by Pollard to dismiss Hastings, who did not get over a shot into the covers. The ball flew in the air and apparently over Pollard’s head as he moved forwards.
However, back-tracking at great speed, Pollard flung his hands over his head to grasp the ball before rolling over backwards.
Because of a back injury, the Central Districts captain, M. E. Chapple, did not bowl yesterday, although he was able to take the field. CANTERBURY First Innings I. R.
