The heavy automatic steel doors of a converted wartime air-raid shelter opened this week to release 142 participants . in Germany’s biggest nuclear war survival test after a six-day stay in the bunker. “Our experiment has succeeded,”' said the medical supervisor of the test, Professor Josef Schink. He also said that a further test would be made under tougher conditions. Only two people had to be treated medically. A 17-year-old female clerk suffered from a nervous strain 12 hours after the beginning of the test but did not leave the bunker. A 51-year-old housewife lost consciousness on Wednesday and was brought to the city hospital for medical treatment. She did not resume the test. The. 48 girls aged between 16 and 21 and the 48 meh and 48 women, aged between 50 and 67 were paid 50 marks (about £4 10s) a day and an additional extra premium for completing the whole test of 75 marks.
