F.O.L. VIEW ON M.P.s
“Minority Of Fighters” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 16. The Federation of Labour would prefer a minority of fighting. Labour members of Parliament, rather than a Labour majority with no clear understanding of working class principles, its secretary, Mr K- McL. Baxter, told a recent meeting of the •Wellington Trades Council, according to a supplied re : port. Mr Baxter was reporting on the 1964 Federation of Labour conference which adopted the controversial national executive report on the class struggle. He was sure most members of the Labour movement would agree on Parliamentary representation, Mr Baxter said. It was preferable to have “a good, strong fighting, minority of Labour members in Parliament who could be sure of the backing of a loyal and class-conseiou? trade union movement.” This was why the national council had resolved in 1947 to select Labour Party candidates with a trade union background and workingclass understanding, he said. This decision had been endorsed in 1951.
