CHEMICALS ON FARMS

Forecast By Minister

The Department of Agriculture is likely to restrict the use of chemicals on farms to guard against contamination of export meat. This was forecast yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Hayman), speaking at the opening of the farmers’ conference at Canterbury Agricultural College. He was referring to the recent reports of contamination of New Zealand beef reaching the United States.

“It does appear that residue trouble is being caused by actions on the farm and in treatment of our pasture." said Mr Hayman. “This is not an insoluble difficulty, but it will require definite and firm action by my department and thoughtfulness on your part. “We are a trading country, and where you have something to sell the biggest businesses in the world have been built up on the idea that the customer is always right. “I will have to be the instrument which will be used to impose restrictions on the use of chemicals, and selenium might be among these. It will be up to my department to undertake such restrictions as will be necessary to give effect to the principle that the customer is always right.

“I will not shirk my responsibilities. In the United States market we have a stake of about 60m dollars a year.”
