Tests On N.Z. Beef
th mm Out Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. May 17.
Another day of testing in the United States has failed to find traces of D.D.T. or benzene hexachloride in shipments of beef from New Zealand.
Advice received today by the Minister of Agriculture •Mr Hayman) indicates that 16 more samples representing consignments amounting to 150 tons have been tested. It is understood that the original complaint related to one sample of meat taken from a shipment taken to America in the Patagonia Star. This sample was tested after having been selected at random.
Since then, American meat inspectors have concentrated on beef shipments from New Zealand and are still taking samples from each shipment. Some 30 of these have been tested without any confirmation of the original finding. It is not known when the United States authorities will revert to the normal system of random inspection.
