GAS FROM VOLCANO
Deaths In Java (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) DJAKARTA, May 17. Ten persons have died from the poison gas and lava which is pouring from the erupting Merapi volcano, about 20 miles north-east of Jogkarta, in Central Indonesia. More than 60,000 persons have fled from the advancing streams of lava, reported British United Press. Many homes have been destroyed and hundreds of acres of ricefields covered by the lava. Government officials say that the most danger is now coming from poison gas. which is seeping across a heavily populated area to the south of Merapi.
