SAN FRANCISCO. May 17.
A former Olympic lightweight boxer Harry Campbell died today of a brain injury received in a bout on Monday night. Campbell, aged 23, died In hospital without regaining consciousness. He underwent a three-hour emergency brain operation early yesterday to relieve the effects of a brain haemorrhage. Campbell reached the quarter-finals of his division in the Rome Olympics. He had won his first five professional fights; but he lost his sixth on a points decision two months ago, to the same man he fought on Monday, Al Medrano.
In the final round on Monday Medrano knocked Campbell down twice. He was saved by the final bell from being counted out but he was carried from the ring on a stretcher still unconscious and taken to hospital.
