CHILEAN NAVY’S TRAINING SHIP

•The Press” Spectat Service WELLINGTON, May 16. The Chilean Navy's training ship Esmeralda, which will visit Wellington from June 2 to June 7, left Chile a the beginning of March on a five motitbs’ cruise in the Pacific. The ship, which has on board a contingent of Chilean cadets, as well as some cadets of the Ecuadorian navy receiving their training in Chile, will call at Easter Island, the Marquesas and Sydney before arriving in New Zealand waters. The Esmeralda, which was built in Spain in the early 4950’s takes her name from a vessel which achieved immortal fame in Chile’s naval history during the 1879 Pacific war when Chile fought and beat the Peruvian-Bolivian alliance. The old Esmeralda was lost but before sinking, her crew made a determined but hopeless effort to board the Huascar. at the time one of Jhe most powerful vessels afloat. . Not long afterwards the I Huascar, at that time one of Chilean force under the command of Admiral Latorre. and to this day she is at anchor in the port of Talcahuano, where she is preserved as a naval museum. The modem Esmeralda is used for giving practical instruction to navy and merchant navy cadets at the end of their training at the naval academy in Valparaiso.
