Unemployment
Rises

Unemployment in Australia rose during April by 7502, according to figures released by the Minister of Labour (Mr W. McMahon) yesterday. Falls in the number of unemployed occurred in Queensland and Western Australia, but this was more than offset by a rise in the other four States.
The number of people registered for jobs with the Commonwealth Employment Service rose from 81.865 to 89.367 during the month. In April the number of unemployment benefits paid rose by 5307 to 35,025. Registrations for unemployment at the end of April represented 2.1 per cent, of the Australian work force, estimated at 4.2 million. '
