SOUTHLAND WORKS
4ni Kill For Season
fN.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 16. For the first time in the history of Southland's meat export industry, the kill of sheep and lambs for a season has exceeded 4.000.000. Last season’s record of 3,933,000 sheep and lambs was exceeded last week and today the province’s four works passed the 4.000.000 mark. It has taken only five years for the seasonal kill to climb from 3,000,000 to the present figure. It was in 1956 that Southland’s freezing works—there were three of them in those days—had a kill of more than 3,000,000 for the first time. Eight years before that, in 1948, the kill reached 2,000,000 for a season and 15 years before that, in 1933. the figure exceeded 1,000.000 for the first time. It is expected that before the works close early next month the figure for the four works will reach 4.350,000 for the season, and that next season 4,500,000 will be passed.
