AUSTRALIAN TUNA

Possible Industry

C.V.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. May 16. A large-scale tuna industry in Australia could be an important saver of foreign exchange, a Tariff Board inquiry was told today. The Fish Canners’ Association is applying for increased import duties on tuna from overseas. The chief tariff officer of the Chamber of Manufacturers of New South Wales (Mr C. E. Gandry) said that higher duties were needed to enable the local tuna-can-ning industry to expand and to compete with imports from the low-cost countries of Japan and Peru. It was unrealistic to expect the industry to attract capital if its market was threatened by imports. Mr Gandry said the value of imported canned fish was almost equal to the value of the whole of the fish caught in Australia. The inquiry is proceeding.
