HEPATITIS RISK

‘Syringes Should Be Used Only Once”

Syringes should not be used for injecting more than one person, even when the needle is changed, because of the risk of spreading infective hepatitis, says the Health Department. The recommendation is printed in the "New Zealand Medical Journal.” The number of persons in New Zealand carrying infective hepatitis virus "A” at some time in 1960 could possibly have been 36,450—10 times the number of cases notified to the department—and the recipient of an injection from the same syringe as a carrier could be inoculated with the disease, says the department. The large number of carriers compared with notifications was attributable partly to the infection being usually present both before and after the occurrence of clinical symptoms, and partly to the large number of infections where the symp*oms did not include jaundice, or where no symptoms appeared at all.
