CRICKET Second Win Likely For Australians

(A.Z. Press Association—Copyright! LONDON, May 16. The Australian team was in an almost unbeatable position at the close of the second day’s play in the match against Surrey.

The Surrey team which had 1 followed on after a first i innings score of 161 was eight down for 207. Two of t the county’s best batsmen, : P. May and D. Fletcher, are : unlikely to bat because of injuries. May retired hurt after scoring 26. The Australian captain, R. ' Benaud, enforced the follow- ' on when Surrey’s first innings folded quickly after a partnership between May and M. W. Willett had been broken. It had added 96 runs in 92 minutes and was pushing the score along when Willett was caught by F. Misson. That was the start of a

landslide which meant the end for Surrey. The team lost six wickets for 40 and with Fletcher absent because of his broken finger were all out for 161. R. Simpson took most of the wickets, finishing with four for 13. He captured the later batsmen by keeping the ball well up to them and by being supported by good catching in the field. Earlier Misson had bowled well, getting some lift from the pitch and this troubled May and J. Edrich. May was thumped on the shoulder by one rising ball. Then he ducked into one which pitched short but didn’t lift, and just missed being hit on the head. A. Davidson was having trouble with the pitch at the point of delivery at the pavilion end, and was unim-

pressive in the first innings. His 16 overs cost 64 runs. When he changed ends in the second innings he bowled better and faster than he had done on the tour so far. He struck the first blow by getting Edrich lbw and in an eight-over spell he took one for seven. Australia’s top batsman, N. O’Neill, was also injured in the match. He twisted his ankle when he went over on it while fielding. He did not return after leaving the field. Benaud said that O’Neill was having a "precautionary rest” and probably would not bat on the third day. The injury is not regarded as serious and O’Neill has plenty of time to recover, as he is not playing in the match against Cambridge on Wednesday. Another injury was suffered by W. Lawry. who bruised a shin bone when it was struck by a fierce pull from Willett. Scores:—
