ADDINGTON MARKET Entries Mainly Smaller And Prices Better

There were much smaller entries in the main fat stock sections at Addington market yesterday and prices generally hardened as a result. Heavy butchers’ lambs lifted 3s to 4s a head, and improved freezing competition caused lighter sorts to firm by Is to 2s. Best young wethers were a good 2s dearer and most ewes appreciated 2s to 3s a head with a very strong market for plain sorts with heavy fleeces. The fat cattle entry was down to only a little more than 200 head, and prices for the better steers and heifers in this small selection, appreciated by 60s to 80s a head in a strong market.

FAT LAMBS The fat lamb entry showed a marked reduction and only 19H head came forward, compared with 3414 last week. Quality, however, was much improved and there was a good selection of medium weight sorts. Top butchers’ weights were not plentiful, although some excellent pens were yarded, and values for the medium to heavy lambs rose by 3s to 4s a head. With the smaller entry there was improved competition for the lighter sorts and light to medium-weights firmed by Is to 2s a head on last week’s rates. The market was topped by M. P. Larkin (Rotomanu) with a remarkable line of 60 which made from 67s Id to 86s Id. He sold 10 at the top figure, eight at 83s fid. five at 81s Id. 10 at 77s Id, nine at 72s Id. eight at 70s Id, and 10 at 67s Id. J. Crossen (Lagmhor) was next with 72 at 68s Id to 72s Id, and V. A. Quality did not show much change and there were 9 ult ? a . number of plain and unfinished sheep forward. Good quality young wethers showed an appreciation of fully 2s a head, reflecting the shortage of heavy lambs, and a bigger proportion of the offering changed hands in the 70s to 80s price range. Prime lightweights were again meeting a strong inquiry. Older wethers and indifferent quality did not show much change, however, and again met a limited demand.

In the ewe section values generally rose by 2s to 3s a head. Best ewes were keenly sought and prices for genuine old ewes ranged up to 46s Id. The market also improved markedly for plain ewes with a good covering of wool, almost irrespective of condition, and some classes were as much as 5s to 6s ahead of last week’s prices. Young ewes sold at dearer prices but did not gain quite as much as comparable young wethers. Shorn old ewes met a very sound sale. Top price for wethers of 86s Id was shared by Rockwood Farm, Ltd. (Hororata). and Clarkson Bros. (Mt Hutt) who also had a sale at 83s Id. A T and L. A. Watson (Kaituna) sold a pen at 82s Id and P. A. Hart (Mitcham) received 80s Id for his tops. W. E.
