Squash Rackets FIRST CLUB MATCHES
Officers’ Club Only Winner
Officers' Club took an early lead when the Christchurch squash rackets inter-club comE etition commenced last evenig. It was the only team to win in the first round, two other matches between Christchurch B and Christchurch D. and Christchurch A and Wigram being drawn, both teams in each game winning two matches and seven sets each. With one match. Christchurch C v. Lincoln College postponed until next week, and the strong University A team having the bye, last night’s results gave little real indication of likely prospects for the remainder of the inter-club season. Officers’ Club was never in danger against University B J. Pine scoring Unlverslty s only win in a tong and interesting five-setter against the experienced J. Cotter, although the promising youngster L. J. Walpole did better than the acores Indicate In his match with M. L. Rooney. At Wigram the home team was without J. S. Boys, but Christchurch A did not have its No. 1, the leading Canterbury player, H. S. Galr. The top Wlgram player. S. M. Hope, was in good form and G Moss made a promising debut tn senior squash. The match between Christchurch B and Christchurch D was always close, and there was considerable interest in the performances of the several ranked players who were in action There was a major upset when A. L. Trembath, the Christchurch B grade titleholder. easily beat P. R. Hadley. ranked ninth in Canterbury. losing only four points, all in the third set. Trembath is a thoughtful and intelligent player who gives little away, and he was in good form but Hadley was well below his best, making many simple and costly errors. The game was over before Hadley settled down, and Trembath actually took 22 points before Hadley scored R. G. Pattlnson was too good for M. O. Holdsworth In the meeting between the top players, giving a typically efficient and polished display. Pattlnson controlled the match almost -throughout. although Holdsworth recovered splendidly to take the third set from five-eight down. Psttlnson scored with some beautiful boasts and drop shota and usually commanded court position. As ever. Holdsworth chased everything and fought hard to the end. but Patttnson showed that he will again be verv difficult to beat this season. Results:— Christchurch A v. Wlyrsm J. Dreaver lost to S. M.
