Transport Policy

Sir, —"Merchant” has* arranged for half the goods, ete., transported throughout New- Zealand. What about the other half? Are they still to be handled by this out-of-date railway? This transport concern already belongs to the people of New Zealand. All it needs is sufficient patronage. More revenue would definitely mean better service. Let us reverse the proposal by “Merchant” and close down all transport concerns not co-operating with the railway. This would put some lorry drivers out of work but they could be absorbed by the busier railway. Think also of the money saved taxpayers on roadmaking and maintenance, to say nothing of safer highways to drive on. “It is up to the Government to think along these lines.” If they played their part in this direction consumer costs would soon be reduced. — Yours, etc., TOM BRYCE.
