Indoor Basketball REBELS BEAT RANGIORA

Women’s Senior Match

With both Teachers’ College and University on vacation, only one senior game was played when the Canterbury women’s indoor basketball competitions were continued last evening. After its good performance last week, it was expected that Rangiora would provide strong opposition for the leading Rebels’ team, but last year’s competition winners proved too strong. The game produced patches of play of a very high standard. but as a whole was not exciting, with Rebels having the edge throughout. The first few minutes of play were marred by minor infringements, with neither team able to control its passes. Rebels took advantage of loose passes, with B. Polnton intercepting well, to pass to the speedy B. Rogers, who scored a fine lay-up to open the score. Another interception and good passing round and through the Rangiora zone gave the centre. H. Johnson, the opportunity to score with a fine hook shot. Rangiora appeared to put more effort into its game at this stage, and with Rebels play inf a very, close defence, J. McGammon opened the scoring with a long set shot. Good rebounding by C. Ogilvie and B. Pointon gave Rebels ample possession, and with S. Mansfield, H. Johnson, and B. Rogers combining well and moving through the wide Rangiora zone defence, Bebels went further into the lead. Good rebounding by V. Fiddler and h fine cut through brought another goal for Rangiora just on half-time. In the second half. Rangiora played with more determination. and two good shots by Fiddler and L. Rollinson brought Rangiora within striking distance. Rebels were not having any success with their shots for most of the spell, and only fine guarding and good rebounding kept them in the lead. A long set shot by J. Hudson and Rangiora was within one goal of its opponents, but several good goals to H. Johnson and B. Rogers, who were brilliant throughout, gave Rebels a well-deserved 20-12 win.
