S.A. BEAT IRELAND

Rugby At Cape Town

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, May 14. The Springboks had little difficulty in defeating Ireland by 24-8 in the Rugby game at the Newlands ground. Cape Town, on Saturday, British United Press reported. More than 40,000 attended the game. The Springboks pressed frctn the start and early play was almost entirely in the ; Irish half. I After C. Nimb missed a i penalty, B. P. Van Zyl on the i right wing put C. Greenwood away for a try which Nimb converted. Ireland, spurred on by this setback, attacked for the next 10 minutes and T. J. Kiernan had two close penalties, one of which hit the posts. As soon as South Africa countered, weak tackling in the centre let D. J. Hopwood through. He beat several men to score near the line. Nimb again made no mistake with the conversion. Three minutes later Greenwood went through on the other side of the field in a fine passing move but this time Nimb failed to convert. At half-time the score was South Africa 13, Ireland 0. South Africa almost scored again at the beginning of the second half when Nimb hit the upright from a penalty. A minute later he converted a try scored by B. Van Zyl who took a long one-handed pass from H. J. Pelser and went through. Even when the South African fullback, L. G. Wilson, was off the field for 10 minutes in the second half. Ireland could not break through. Instead Nimb scored from a penalty from the halfway line in the thirtieth minute. Ireland finally scored in the dying minutes of the game when Kiernan converted a penalty in front of the posts. He then scored a try in the middle of the line and converted without much trouble The Springboks came back in the last minute with a try scored by B. P. Van Zyl after P. De U. Uys had sent him away. The Springboks were much faster on the ball and on the man. The best player, as in the British tour, was Hopwood. Only in the scrum and line-outs did the visitors really shine.
