Good Win By Old Boys

Old Boys 12: P. J. Morrissey (2). P. L. O'Malley and A. K. Henderson tries. Belfast 3: R. Holt a try.

Old Boys began their match against Belfast with commendable vigour. In the first two minutes, their right wing, P. J. Morrissey, scored in the corner after A. J. Krsinic and P. L. O’Malley had handled in a crisp movement. A. K. Henderson was just wide with a difficult kick. The forwards all packed well at this stage and were unified in the loose. Without let-up the backline again swung rhythmically into action when Panckhurst came in to the backline to give the extra man and Morrissey, quick to capitalise on an overlap, outsprinted the opposition to score his second try. A. J. Krisnic was injured at this point and was replaced by R. A. Dalton. Coincident with the change, the Belfast forwards began hard driving play which put Old Boys on to defence and took the initial sparkle out of the game. Later, two more freerunning movements, in which the opposing centres, Henderson and R. Holt, scored, gave the game some added spectator interest. Henderson’s try resulted from a nicely-manoeuvred dummy scissors between him and Panckhurst. O’Malley, the Old Boys* second five-eighth, played an alert game and scored a good try from loose play. Belfast tried hard to add more points in the last 15 minutes but could not finish off promising back movements. Holt was again the: outstanding attacking player.; Old Boys’ forwards Who; stood out in an even pack I were M. J. Miller and D. Hill. W. H. Kirkland played well tn line-outs. P. Nicholls and G. Wells were useful in cover defence for Belfast, and G. Pateman was solid in tight play. Mr L. S. Kirk was referee. Big Score by McPhail.—The former Canterbury and All Black wing, B. E. MePhail, scored 17 points from five tries and a conversion for Old Boys in the Nelson senior Rugby competition at the week-end. Last week, he scored four tries and kicked four convections. for a total of 20 points.—(PA.)
