DEATH OF MR W. H. FORTUNE

Inquest Concluded

(N.Z Press Associntion) AUCKLAND. May 14. The inquest has been concluded into the death of a former Minister of Police. Wilfred Henry Fortune, aged 63. company director, after a heart operation at Green Lane Hospital on February 28. The Acting-Coroner (Mr A. A. Coates, S.M.) found that death was due to collanse during the operation. This collapse resulted in the failure of the heart to take over when the heart-lung machine was turned off. The failure was directly attributable to the condition of the heart muscle, Mr Coates said. The senior thoracic surgeon at Green Lane Hospital (Dr. B. B. Barratt-Boyes), who nerformed the operation, said Mr Fortune had had previous operations for the heart and had suffered a number of heart failures. There was a certain amount of risk, therefore, in the operation.
