SHIP RUNS AGROUND

Waimakariri Stranding

A strong south-east wind swept the 150-ton cargo boat Picton lightly aground on the northern bank of the Waimakariri river shortly after the vessel crossed the bar at high tide about 230 pm. yesterday. The vessel, owned by the Southern Cross Shipping Company, is carrying about 150 tons of general cargo to the port of Kaiapoi. In calm water, the Picton is in no danger. After attempts to back the vessel into deep water immediately after grounding had proved futile, the engines were stopped. If further attempts to back the vessel free at 2.45 a.m. today are unsuccessful a rope will be run across the river and the vessel hauled off during the afternoon high tide at 322 p.m.
