Minister’s Reward
The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) has personally offered to give a £lO reward for information leading to the conviction of the person who shot a blue heron in Hawke's Bay. “I am sure the public will join with me in' condemnation of the vandal responsible for killing one of our treasured i birds.” he said. Mr Gotz said he was sure the police and the Hawke's Bay Acclimatisation Society would do everything they could to bring the offender to trial.— (P.A.I Hotel Tariffs To cover increased costs, including recent wage increases granted to hotel workers, tariffs at the leading Christchurch hotels have been slightly raised. This is in line with similar increases which have been made at high-standard hotels in other main centres. The local hotels concerned are not controlled, and are free to fix their own charges provided they meet certain minimum standards of accommodation and service. Best rooms at two of the leading Christchurch hotels have risen from £3 7s 6d a person a day to £3 10s. Tattersail’s Prize The first prize of £lO.OOO in Tattersall's 1028th draw went to ticket No. 170428 ‘‘New Tread." of Dunedin. —N.Z.P.A., Melbourne. May 12. Tasman Record The liner Oriana will seek the Tasman record when she sails from Auckland for Sydney on June 9. Her sailing schedule provides for a crossing in 49 hours. The record is held by the Awatea (Captain A. H. Davey), which sailed to Sydney in 55hr 28min. 23 years ago.—(P.A.) “Surprised” A remit from the Oxford branch of Federated Farmers to the annual conference of the provincial agriculture section yesterday asked that, because a cotton mill was being established in Nelson, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research should investigate the possibility of growing cotton in New Zealand. "I'm rather surprised at the Oxford branch putting forward that remit.” said Mr R. Barnes (Waimairi). “They grow quite a lot of wool up there.” The remit was lost. Blood Donations Forty-three persons, including five new donors, gave blood when the North Canterbury Blood Transfusion Service's mobile unit visited Little River on Thursday. This compared with 66 donations on the previous visit in March. 1960. The unit has now been to Little River seven times, and collected 397 pints of blood from 128 donors. Nelson Fruit
Why should Wairarapa people have to eat Nelson fruit when similar fruit was grown in the Wairarapa? asked Mr H. E. Napier, a Greytown orchardist. at the committee of inquiry into apple and pear marketing yesterday. In addition, the small orchardist had to send his fruit to Wellington for inspection—at a cost of Is 6d a case each way. he claimed -(PA )
Bequests To Charity
Bequests to charity are made in the will of Mrs Mary Josephine Toomey, who died in Christchurch on April 6. 1961, leaving an estate which has been granted probate for dutiable purposes at under the value of £35.000. Mrs Toomey has left £250 to the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind for the general purposes of the foundation in Christchurch. A sum of £5OO is left to the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God at Christchurch, and £5OO to the Little Company of Mary, Christchurch, for the purposes of the Mary Potter Hospice.
