AMBASSADOR TO NEPAL
New Office In Katmandu

WELLINGTON, May 11
The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced today that the Government had decided to establish direct diplomatic relations with Nepal Sir Guy Powles, the New Zealand High Commissioner in New Delhi, had been appointed first New Zealand Ambassador in Katmandu. "It is not the Government's intention to establish an office in Katmandu,” Mr Holyoake said. “Sir Guy Powles will hold his new appointment concurrently with his High Commissionerships in India and Ceylon. He will, however, now be in a position to pay occasional visits to Nepal. "Although contacts between New Zealand and Nepal have necessarily been limited, relations between them are most cordial,” said Mr Holyoake. “New Zealand is associated with Nepal in membership of the Colombo Plan and has provided capital grants totalling £50.000 for the development of Nepal’s dairy industry.
“We have accepted a number of Nepalese students for courses at Lincoln and Massey Agricultural Colleges, and on occasions have provided the services oil agricultural experts to advise the Napalese Government."
