STRING QUARTET CONTEST
Christchurch Croup Second (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 11. The Wellington Junior String Quartet won the national final of the New Zealand Federation of Chamber Music Societies’ junior quartet contest in the Little Theatre. Lower Hutt, this evening. The Wellington players were Wendy Pitt and Angela Connell, violins, Sheila Riches, viola, and Lars Johansen, cello. They gained a total of 179 marks. The second prize went to the Christchurch quartet .consisting of Robin Perks and Susan Jones, violins, Marjory Umbleton. viola, and Philippa Harding, cello, with 171 marks.
The judge. Mr Ernest Emnson (Christchurch) expressed disappointment with the playing of the third contestants, the Judisuma Quartet, from Auckland.
The set piece was Haydn’s Opus 33. No. 2. Each contestant also presented a quartet of its own choice.
