Hockey N.Z. TOUR BY INDIANS
16 Players Named The names of the IS players in the Indian hockey team which will arrive in New Zealand on May 29 were received by the New Zealand Hockey Association yesterday. Mr A. D. Holland, chairman of the association, said that information received about the composition of the team indicated that it would be one of the strongest to leave India, and probably the strongest Indian team to visit New Zealand. "There will be six Olympic players, and a further nine have played for the Indian Hockey Federation. The other player has represented Delhi State," said Mr Holland. “The captain, Udham Singh, has represented India in the last three Olympic Games. For the first time an Indian team visiting New Zealand will be accompanied by an Olympic coach, and it is quite clear that the Indians intend to use this tour as part of a build-up for the Indian team for the Asian Games in 1962, and the Olympic Games in 1964," he said. “New Zealand players who toured India after the Rome Olympic Games will look forward to renewing acquaintances made both in Rome and in India, and in maintaining New Zealand's place in international hockey,” said Mr Holland.
Three tests will be played —on June 5 in Auckland, on July 1 in Wellington, and on July 8 in Christchurch. The members of the team are:—
Goal: Gajinder Singh, Jagatinder Prakash. Backs: Pirthipal Singh, Jhaman Lal Sharma, Gurbax Singh.
Half-backs: Desh Mukh, Charanjit Singh (vice-cap-tain), Kiderasan, Sohan Lal.
Forwards: Madan Mohan Singh, Gurdev Singh, Herbinder Singh. Udham Singh (captain), Darehaa Singh, B. Patil, Toppo.
