Competitions Acrobatic Display Warmly Applauded
Continuous applause marked a display of acrobatics by Camille Jones, winner of the acrobatic display, any age, at last evening’s demonstration concert held by the Christchurch Competitions Society in the Civic Theatre. Miss Jones performed intricate twists, turns and splits with fluid movements and perfect control. Judith Burrows, the tiny winner of the sword dance, under eight years, delighted the audience with the professional poise and skill of her performance. “I was disappointed with the standard shown by entrants in the 12 to 14 years group of the sight-reading section,” said Mr Finlay Robb, judge of the instrumental section. “However, I have found that the over-all quality of the piano grades is excellent. Performers are showing some very nice finger work, and tonal quality work is coming across very clearly indeed.
“I do think that there should be more sections in this division. One find® that a year, especially in the eight to 10, and 10 to 12 year groups, can make all the difference. In fairness to competitors it would be advisable to have four divisions instead of only two. “I was interested to find such a strong piano accordion section. I have heard some very good performances from these entrants, and I feel they deserve every encouragement.” SPEECH AND DRAMA St. Luke's Hall Reading at Sight. 10 and under 12 years: Faye Lester 1, Michael Candy 2, Paul Pannell 3.
