(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, May 10. The task of stimulating more interest in male nursing as a profession lay largely with male nurses themselves, said the Minister of Health (Mr Shelton) today.
The profession needed men of sympathy, intelligence and integrity who would regard the work as a vocation. The Minister opened the fourteenth annua] conference of the society of Registered Male Nurses.
He said there was a shortage of male nurses in the country. This shortage offered a challenge to those in the profession to »et an example which would attract men of the right qualities into the profession.
The male nurses needed to achieve the same standard educationally and technically as the female nurses, said Mr Shelton.
In addition he must also posse»s the same sense ot dedication, never forgetting to place the patient’s interests first. The new curriculum to be introduced soon would extend the duties of the male nurse and raise the status of the profession.
