Oxford Power

Sir,—The North Canterbury Power Board’s supply to the Oxford district has fallen far below standard on far too many occasions over the last 10 years, and their technical staff seem unable to assure them that the supply they provide will be anywhere near the standard 240 volts. A voltage regulator installed at Cust has been out for some time. At present electric razors grind to a halt if a jug is switched on and we wait 15 minutes while the jug comes to the boil. Milking machines, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, all show signs of low voltage. The electric duplicator at the local high school has to be helped along by hand. Can you, sir, get an assurance from the board that if an adequate power supply for Oxford is not forthcoming in the immediate future and that if any further trouble occurs they will get outside technical advice? Voltage 1.30 p.m., 210 volts.—Yours, etc., GEORGE SIMON OHM. May, 2, 1961. [“lt is expected that the voltage regulator will be back into service next week. Commencement will be made next month on the building of a new* line between Cust and Oxford,” said the engineer-secretary of the North Canterbury ElectricPower Board (Mr A. Buckingham'* when this letter was referred to him.]
