Camera Sales
Sir, —If “Free Trade” considered the poor living conditions of Hong Kong residents because taxes are not levied to provide hygienic and other amenities he would realise customs and sales tax charges are used to keep him comfortable here. Why, then, should any retailer have to trade on an unfair basis because he is taxed for the comforts of “Free Trade”? As a Presbyterian interested in the work the National Council of Churches is doing to alleviate the sufferings of these unfortunate people, too, I am interested that fair play should exist towards our people, no matter how they earn their living. Would “Free Trade” be prepared to trade on the basis he suggests? I would not. “Free Trade” has forI gotten to add the cost of his fare to his £2B camera. Being unable to afford this high cost of a camera, most New Zealanders are content to pay the retailer the normal mark-up price.—Yours, etc., FAIR PLAY. May 9, 1961.
