Boxing STEWART-MAHONI FIGHT
Comment By Referee ' 182 Press- Association) WELLINGTON. May 8. The referee of the recent Stewart-Mahoni professional boxing bout in Wellington. Mr T. Fox. said today that there was no such thing as a 30-second count. He had been asked to comment on a report by thq “Sydney Tele, graph” boxing columnist Keith Robbins, that the referee had refused to count after Stewart had knocked Mahoni out of the ring in the eleventh round. “Mahoni was not knocked out of the ring, he fell—and he was out for five seconds at the most," said Mr Fox. “If I had given Mahoni a count it would have been of 20 seconds, and that would have been an obvious disadvantage to Stewart. “There is a rule that if a boxer is knocked, or falls, from the ring, there may be be a count of 10 or 20 seconds, according to the circumstances.
“But in the circumstances of Mahoni’s tall through the ropes, there would be no count. He wasn't hurt, and came back into the ring ready to continue the fight almost immediately,” said Mr Fox.
