EXCLUSION OF WIFE
Explanation By Mr Blazey
“I regret that Mrs Collier was. caused some distress which could have been so easily avoided if the normal procedure had been followed,” said the president of the Canterbury Rugby Union (Mr H. C. Blazey) yesterday. Mr Blazey was commenting on the report that Mrs J. M. Collier was prevented from entering the dressing room under the No. 1 stand at Lancaster Park on Saturday to see her injured husband.
“The injured player should not have been taken to the changing room, but to the first-aid room provided for such cases,” Mr Blazey said. “This room is fully equipped and manned by St. John Ambulance men. Doctors are also available, and were on Saturday. The room is clearly marked.”
Reasons for excluding members of the public, and particularly women, from the changing rooms were obvi. Ous. The groundsman (Mr C. Barnes) acted according to his instructions, which were that no-one except players, coaches, and officials was allowed in, said Mr Blazey. “I can only say that I am sincerely sorry that Mrs Collier was caused avoidable distress, and hope in future that if any close relative is concerned about an injured player he will inquire either at the first-aid room or of a member of the union’s executive or of the Victory Park Board,” Mr Blazey said.
