TRUCK GOES INTO RIVER
Woman Killed
(NZ. Press Association) WHAKATANE, May 7. A woman died instantly when a truck carrying 17 people fell into the Rangitaiki river near the hydroelectric village of Te Mahoe soon after 8 o’clock on Saturday night. None of the other occupants, adults and children, was injured. The woman was: Mrs Polly Hare, aged 27, of Waiohau. The truck was travelling from Te Mahoe to Waiohau. Mrs Hare was one of 12 people on thp tray. Two adults and four children were in the cab. In a bend of the road the wheels of the truck went over the edge and the vehicle careered down the bank into the river, 25 feet below. It ended up on its wheels in 15ft of water. The people in the cab were trapped but the dead woman’s husband dived into the water and got the children to safety before the other passengers freed the two adults from the cabin. Mrs Hare was crushed by the truck in its fall.
