Centennial Pool
Sir.—With amazement I read Cr. R. G. Brown’s statement that the swimming clubs hold very few carnivals at the Centennial Pool and so the roofing of the pool is unwarranted. Very few carnivals are held there—but has it ever occurred to Mr Brown why this is so? Quite apart from the lucrative charges the council makes on carnivals, the risk of a poor attendance through foul weather is too great for the meagre finances of the clubs, for, fair weather or foul, the council Charges are still to be met. With a roof on the pool, this risk is done away with and we would find many clubs holding their carnivals at the
Centennial Pool as when we had the Tepid Baths in Manchester Street. Kain did not greatly affect the attendance then, but how many are prepared to sit it out now, with wind whistling through their legs and rain trickling down their necks? —Yours, etc.. EX-SWIMMER. May 4, 1961.
