Smith Street
Sir, —After the war, 'we were told, Smith street will be extended to the avenue. So far, two planks over a drain, a rough grassy fenced lane of 200 yards, is our nearest bus stop. The alternative, a walk of half a mile to Ferry road. The forming of this 200 yards would give a continuous road from Ferry road to Butterfield avenue, and make the shopping area in the avenue available to Smith street residents. The old council paddocks have a sealed road, yet we cannot get decent access to the avenue. Will the works committee please see into this and give us a definite starting date?—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. April 26, 1961. (The Acting Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr C. S. Bowie) said that the continuation of Smith street would be considered again with the estimates this year.)
