Books on the lives, cultures and religions of the Southeast Asian peoples are being collected by members of the Christchurch area group of the Pan-Pacific and Southeast Asia Women’s Association. The group intends to operate a lending and reference library at club meetings and to make a permanent "home” for the records and journals of the group and the association. iTie p-esident of the groun (Miss Mary McLean) said full records of the group’s activities since its formation 14 years ago were at present being handed from member to member for safekeeping The llbrarv would mean that the records would be available to all members and would also be preserved The association’s journal would also be kept there and overseas grouos interested in the project would send books as well “Our library will start in a small way.” said Miss McLean. “At first it will be onen to members at meetings But as it grows we will nrobablv house it somewhere else in the citv where it will be more readily available ” Miss McLean said the Christchurch group was the first in New Zealand to begin a library. "Others will no doubt follow our example and start libraries of their own,” she said. Having a very large and active membership, the Christchurch group is growing steadily and has a strong influence in the affairs of the association. Miss McLean is also Dominion president.
