Harriers LOVELOCK RELAY

Dunedin Race Today

Four Christchurch harrier clubs are expected to compete in the twenty-fifth Lovelock commemorative relay at Dunedin today. Organised by the Otago University Harrier Club, the event commemorates Jack Lovelock’s 1500 metre win at the Berlin Games in 1936 and the members of the six-man teams taking part in today’s relay will each run a leg of 1500 metres. For several years teams from Canterbury University were dominant in the event, winning it on several occasions in record time, and this club will be keen to regain the trophy, which it lost last year to another Christchurch club, Technical. Another Christchurch club which has been contesting the event for several years now 1* Marist A fourth Christchurch club, Olympic, was considering entering a team also. Winner of the University club’s Hagley steeplechase relay last week by a substantial margin, Olympic will be a strong prospect provided it fields its best team. Technical will not be as strong as when it won tha event last year, for two of its leading runners will not be travelling Second in the New Zealand half-mile championship to the record holder, Gary Philpott, Gerald Hack would have added greatly to Technical’s chances. The other member who will not be with the team is Brian Buckley, who last week recorded the second fastest lap time for the Hagley steeplechase relay.
