BANDED BIRDS

Co-operation Urged

An appeal to sportsmen to return any iegbends found on game birds during the shooting season now at hand has been made by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz). It is from these legbands that biologists obtain information necessary to working out policy for management of the country’s game birds. Such information includes facts on survival, population, length of life, movements, and dispersal patterns of the birds. Mr Gotz said that since 1947 more than 30.000 wild grey and mallard ducks have been banded, and since 1955 about 14.000 black swan and Canada geese. Trapping and banding is usually carried out in January and February each year. Black swan and Canada geese are usually banded at Lake Ellesmere and ducks mainly in the Waikato and Otago. Other banded game birds are pheasants and California quail. “I would emphasise that all band recoveries are important, even if obtained near a known banding station," said Mr Gotz. “Bands should be flattened and sent to the wildlife branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington. Enclosed should be a note giving the date and place the bird was shot, and your name and address. “The wildlife branch will acknowledge your note and tell you where and when your bird was banded,” he said.
