Butchers Charged I Twenty charges have been filed against six Christchurch butchers by the Trade Practices and Prices Division of the Department of Industries and Commerce. The charges allege overcharging or failure to ticket goods. Public Functions A graduation ceremony, said the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) in his address at the Canterbury University graduation ceremony yesterday, was one of the few occasions when a New Zealand community could witness dignified pageantry and be given a lesson in proper display of J corporate unself-consclous-iness. This was told to the board of governors yesterday when the board was congratulating the band on being chosen to take part in the ceremony. School Holidays Today is the last day of school in the first term for all State schools in Canterbury. The second term for all schools, except some postprimary schools, will start on May 22. The remaining postprimary schools, will start on later in the week. Safety “Watchdogs” A tribute to the work of the “watchdogs” of road safety committees throughout New Zealand was paid by [the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) at yesterday's half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Road Safety Council. “If it were not for the efforts of these local committees. I'm sure our accident rate would be higher,” Mr McAlpine said. “Their knowledge and insight of local traffic problems make them a strong force for road safety, and their voluntary efforts assist immeasurably in stimulating and maintaining interest in our cause.”—(P.A.) Witlof On Sale A very small quantity of witlof, a Dutch cabbage, was sold in the Christchurch produce markets yesterday. The cabbage, which looks like small. fine-grained celery, is very popular with migrants from Europe. It sold at 8s a case. Most vegetables were still plentiful or in fair supply. and prices were moderate Pumpkin sold up to 15s 6d a large sack, but brussels sprouts were dear, bringing from 18s to 31s a sugar bag. Kumeras from the North Island sold up to 60s a sugar bag. Benmore Dam Record ‘ quantities of materials have been placed this week on the earth dam at the Benmore project. The highest total to date, 26.000 cubic yards, was placed during an 11-hour period on Tuesday, and was followed by 25.000 yards placed on Wednesday. The dam when finished will be 360 ft high and will span a valley 2000 ft wide, impounding a lake 18 miles long to generate 540.000 kilowatts more than the combined outputs of the Roxburgh and Maraetai schemes To date, some 3,100.000 cubic yards has been placed on the dam’s eventual volume of 15.4 million cubic yards.— (PA.)
