INTER-LOAN OF BOOKS
Librarians Told Of System “In the 20 to 30 years the inter-loan system has been working it has < been a success story in every way."’ said Mrs S. E Shea, who is in charge of the interloan system at the University of Canterbury Library. She was one of three speakers talking about library co-operation to the first conference of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Library Association on Saturday. “Without the system, we could not properly exist with our slender stocks of books,” said Mrs Shea. "The stocks are not as slender as they used to be, but they are pretty slender compared to other countries.” About 70 librarians attended the conference. Most came from the Canterbury Public Library, the University of Canterbury Library, and Christchurch suburban libraries, and 15 came from libraries on the We«t Coast, Nelson, and Marlborough. The two other speakers on Saturday afternoon were Mr F. C. Rainbow, president of the Christchurch Suburban Libraries’ Association, and Mr C. Shearer, who is in charge of the Country Library Service in Christchurch. Mr C. W. Collins, the librarian at the University of Canterbury library, who was one of the founders of the inter-loan library service in New Zealand, presided. The conference was opened by the president of the New Zealand Library Association (Miss M Fleming) The chairman of the Christchurch City Council library committee (Cr. R. G. Brown) welcomed the delegates on behalf of the City Council Yesterday morning some of the delegates visited libraries in Christchurch.
